Inspired by the Northern Lights we have been lucky enough to glimpse in the UK this year. I remember seeing them once before as a child, but in the days before smartphones, so the experience was quite different.
This painting is an abstract and elaborate take on my Aurora experiences, but it gives me the same feeling of wonder.
I have included a scene at the bottom of the canvas reminiscent of my enchanted forest work, with the intention that you have perhaps come to a break in the forest and look up to the expanse of sky.
I figure if you saw a spectacle like this it really would be once in a lifetime!

Caputuring the joy of a the carefree summers of youth - that I hope my children experience despite the changing world.
Images of wildflower blooms, days by the sea, marvelling at the intricate pattern of sea shells as you select the best one.
Summer rain, which seems the most refreshing you have ever felt.
A strong breeze which somehow feels both cool and warm carries the steady intermittent clouds across the bluest sky you have ever seen…a playground for the birds as they enter their season of fun and diminished responsibility.

It came out of a strong desire to capture the blinding light you get on a snowy winter day and the place you might find if you explored a frozen landscape.
You discover a remote, uncharted place with crystalline walls and glassy floors.
Veils of water fall, but their sound is hushed by an icy mist hanging in the air. Above you the blinding light of the Sun has also found a way in.
In this place of light and ice you can pause in reflective solitude.
Your breath slows, your thoughts become clear, you begin to heal.

The world can seem pretty bleak sometimes, and although this painting might feel heavy and uncertain, if you look closely there are flashes of colour and clear detail.

Part of my Making Tracks series inspired by bird migration around the globe.
During their perilous journey the birds encounter a particularly intense tropical Storm.
The power of the elements is unleashed and threatens to bring their journey to and abrupt and permanent halt.
They are exhausted, disorientated and almost give up hope, but finally the storm subsides.
They see a way through and get back on course.
Rich and vibrant colours indicate the intensity of the storm and suggest a tropical
twist.

This painting started as an exploration of rocks, crystals. metals and all the hard surfaces of the land.
As I worked a bird emerged, who I imagined travels through time as well as space.
The bird is made of and connected to the ancient and precious parts of the Earth that are hidden below ground.
The bird journeys far and wide, but always returns to the Earth.

An experimental piece, the first
circular painting I completed.
Translating from rectangle to circle can be challenging…composition and balance needs to shift. I found myself incorporating lots of linear lines to compensate for the curve of the canvas.
There was no starting point, other than the desire to combine the dark, Prussian blue with the bright green toned yellow.
This was a challenging piece- being the first of its kind, but we got there in the end.

I wanted to capture the all consuming force of the ocean.
It's an age old story that the ocean has a special hold over us, an invisible pull.
We are mesmerized by its beauty and in awe of its power, It has the ability to heal us both mentally and physically.
For me, painting has an air of romance, suggested in the colour of the sky and it's echos in the water.
Imagine, just for a moment, being totally alone in the vastness of the ocean, the force of the wind means you can hardly catch your breath whilst the sea and the sky perform their beautiful dance all around you.
TERRIFYING - yes, but also completely exhillarating!

Journey into a secret world.
A refuge from the mundane and arduous aspects of life.
Here you can be totally free, a visitor to observe nature in its purest form, away from the effects of humankind.

Wanting to make the line of division/horizon high up on the canvas, the idea of representing a canyon was born.
The detail of the earth with all its beautiful mineral facets laced with tree roots gives a very strong, foundational feel to this painting.
Despite the distance, there is an established flow all the way from the depths of the earth to the sky above…
Perfectly illustrating the unity of nature.

Take yourself off to be surrounded by nature…breath it in and relax.
Before long you start to see and feel the magic.
Your senses awaken from their dormant state.
You notice every movement, every change in the light, every colour that once was grey.
You can feel with every inch of your skin.
You finally begin to heal.

I began by painting a more literal sky, with the easily recognisable combination of blue sky with pale clouds.
I then introduced a dividing point with red.
Wanting to keep the feeling of elevation and disconnect from the land, the red began to signify a tree canopy.
I fell in love with the strength or the colour and the and the strong contrast between the warm and cold colours.
I kept glimpses of blue through the ‘trees’ so as not to swamp the painting and to suggest breaks in the canopy.

Painted during lockdown of one of the places I truly missed visiting.
This spot near St Just is full of nostalgia and mystery with its caves and mineshafts. It conjures images of moon-lit journeys and smugglers. At low tide the huge rocks are picturesque and provide the perfect playground for exploring the rock pools, but the tide turns and the dramatic battle between sea and stone commences and is a sight to behold.

I began with a vision of jewel tones on black.
Painted directly after It’s Complicated, I wanted to explore a darker feeling within this collection of abstracts - as if going from day to night.
I drew inspiration from books read at bedtime as a child.
I remember the fantastic, detailed illustrations accompanying these magical stories of enchanted forests and witches and incredible adventures.
As I laid down the colours with a palette knife the pthalo turquoise based blue quickly became the anchoring colour - representing the moonlit sky.
As I progressed I saw the forest emerge silhouetted against the sky.
The night time activity was unveiled and captured with flecks of silver and gold and thick, seemingly illuminated daubs of paint.
Linear, fine brush marks suggest pathways of insects darting through the forest.
A whole hive of activity is uncovered which would usually remain unseen, beneath the cover of darkness.

Painted with signs of spring surrounding my garden studio.
The track-like, travelling markings I found myself making, quickly got me thinking about migration in nature.
Swallows would be embarking on their journey from Africa right about now.
My painting came to represent a birds eye (excuse the pun) view of their incredible journey.
You will notice these track-like gestures are present in lots of my recent pieces.
They have both aesthetic and representational uses.

This work was critical in developing my more abstract style.
It was painted in mid-Summer 2021. Restrictions were easing,
the weather was hot and the days were long.
Aiming for a bright optimistic feel,
I laid down the brightest colours you might find in nature and pondered the feelings and images they connect with.
I found myself flitting from place to place and eventually connecting area to area.
It conjured images of bees and hummingbirds darting from flower to flower.
Then came Irises. Grass. A waterfall.
Everything about this painting speaks to me of freshness and energy and vibrant Summer days

It was my desire to challenge myself and prove that I don’t rely solely on bright, intense colours to make a piece work.
I toned down and ‘pastelised’ the paint by adding lots of white, both to the palette during mixing and also straight to the canvas.
In Daydreamer the feeling of a dreamlike state quickly emerged. The sense of drifting through clouds in a pastel sky.
Undulating, organic lines creating natural pathways, and
flashes of gold and silver and veins of stronger colour bringing moments of clarity to your semi-conscious state.

My starting point here was simply to use my favourite blue (Prussian) as the base colour for the sky.
I started to incorporate pthalo green and titanium white and soon a seascape started to emerge.
Loose sweeping marks with a palette knife was the perfect way to depict crashing waves and the spray of the ocean.
Not one for using a limited palette I feel the addition of pink, orange and yellow and finally glints of silver leaf added even more energy to the scene.
If you stand close enough you can almost feel the sea spray!

I often walk my dog around Tring and Wilstone Reservoirs and they never, ever, disappoint.
They change in all kinds of beautiful ways with the seasons and the weather.
On a clear sunny day, it’s like being on holiday beside an inviting Lake, but when a mist descends an eerie haunting beauty envelops the entire
scene.
The sky on that particular evening had stuck in my mind, it was special!
So when I saw Martin’s photos, I just had to paint my version of his beautiful capture.
Not photographic or hyper realistic, but a softer version, slightly Turneresque, like the image from memory…whilst still
capturing the burning intensity of that amazing sky.
